Hong Kong’s longest-running polo tournament brings players of all backgrounds and abilities together across borders for three days of sport, celebration and community.
The Hong Kong Polo Cup Returns for Its Fifth Edition
Founded by Andrew Leung of Hong Kong Polo Development, the fifth edition of the Hong Kong Polo Cup will be its biggest yet. Taking place from 4 to 6 December, the event will feature a record number of Hong Kong players.The Hong Kong Beginners Cup is the main event, bringing together four teams of non-professional players from a range of backgrounds. It celebrates their passion for polo and the commitment they have shown to the sport. A special rule prevents team captains from scoring, encouraging teamwork and giving every player the opportunity to contribute.Above all, the event is a celebration of community. It is an annual gathering where players, guests and newcomers can connect, enjoy the sport and celebrate together. About
The founder of Hong Kong Polo Development, Andrew Leung developed and ran the first Hong Kong Beginner's Cup. As one of the few Hong Kong Indigenous polo players in his generation, Andrew wishes to bring the sport of polo back to Hong Kong, but this time with an emphasis on inclusivity and community engagement. He currently works as a barrister in Hong Kong.

Making a Polo Player Documentary
This piece follows HKPD member Gary Sze who over the course of six months, goes from having absolutely no riding experience to playing his first polo tournament with other HKPD beginners. This documentary not only showcases all the hard-work Gary put into his polo experience, but also the camaraderie and friendships made along the way with other fellow HKPD members.

The inaugural Hong Kong Beginners’ Cup took place on 13 and 14 October 2018 at Tianjin Metropolitan Polo Club. The tournament marked the culmination of an intensive ten-month programme that took its first group of Hong Kong residents—many with no previous riding or polo experience—from their earliest lessons to competitive play.Four teams competed across the two-day event, which featured a ceremonial team parade, live commentary and an enthusiastic crowd of friends, families and supporters. EB Communications were crowned the first champions, with Lam Tsuen finishing as runners-up. Metropolitan and Deacons placed third and fourth respectively.

2020 Edition
Hong Kong Beginners' Cup
Winner: Lam Tsuen
Location: Metropolitan Polo Club, Tianjin
MVP: Michael Li, Jackie Wang, Andrew Leung
Team Lam Tsuen claimed the top spot at the second edition of The Hong Kong Beginners' Cup. Lam Tsuen bested team Aquila in a tight match for the cup, leading the prior champions to settle for second place. At the consolation final, team CPA faltered to team Deacons, with the latter notching a 3rd place position.

2022 Edition
Hong Kong Beginners' Cup
Winner: Deacons
Location: VS Sports Park, Thailand
MVP: Taylor Hui
The tournament took place at King Power Siam Polo Park in Thailand. Played in a round-robin format over two days, Deacons dominated from the outset, winning every chukker and lifting the cup for the first time. Aquila, fielding the tournament’s largest roster, found its rhythm on the second day and finished as runners-up. Previous champions Lam Tsuen struggled to build momentum and placed third, scoring one goal. After days of torrential rain, the few precious hours of sunshine on both match days proved to be another welcome victory.

2024 Edition
Hong Kong Challenge Polo Cup
Winner: Lam Tsuen
Location: Metropolitan Polo Club, Tianjin
MVP: Alvin Wong
The fourth edition, named the Hong Kong Challenge Polo Cup, returned to Tianjin Metropolitan Polo Club. Returning teams Deacons and Lam Tsuen competed with revised line-ups alongside two new entrants, Tera Data and Metropolitan Polo Club. Lam Tsuen reclaimed the title, while Deacons finished as runners-up. Tera Data and Metropolitan Polo Club placed third and fourth, respectively.
